How Can Candles Enhance Your Home Yoga Experience?

With so many studies showing the powerfully positive effect yoga can have on your health and well-being, you may have signed up for a few classes or started taking the yogic lifestyle seriously. If so, you are probably well aware of its amazing ability to lower stress hormone levels, and to increase vitality, lift the mood, and instill a welcome state of mindfulness. Yoga is one of the most addictive activities there is, in the very best sense.  Lighting a Flame Inside and Outside

 Many people use candles while practising yoga for three main reasons; firstly, candles can be used to enter into a mindful state, their flickering flames making for a perfect point of focus. Secondly, candles can bear a beautiful fragrance that can affect our mood; citric scents, for instance, have an energising effect, lavender relaxes, while jazmin can instil a sense of joy. Those who practise yoga often have a passion for  incense for the very same reason: its ability to transport us to a mindful state almost instantly. Finally, the aesthetic appearance of candles matter. A white candle, for instance, is perfect when we are meditating on the state of purity; black candles, meanwhile, add a rich, sensual touch to our meditative or yogic experience.

Choosing Natural Candle Varieties

To avail of all the benefits of candles, choose natural soy-based candles instead of paraffin. Most store bought candles are unfortunately made of paraffin, which releases toxins that have been deemed carcinogenic by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). There are over 20 toxins emitted into our home environment when we burn these candles, which can also produce unsightly soot. Soy candles which are 100% natural, on the other hand, do not release toxins, produce soot, or contain any substances which can be harmful to human health. They also burn 50% longer than paraffin candles, making them great value for money. Moreover, you don’t have to forego a lovely scent, since these candles often contain essential oils, and are available in enticing scents such as oakmoss, cedar and vanilla, blue pine, espresso or even mountain fig.

If you’d like to add a bit more authenticity to your home yoga space, fill it with the colours of the chakra and plants, make sure you have a comfy mat to sit on, and use candles as a point of focus and to add ambience and fragrance to the most relaxing part of your day.
